Lots of you - lots! - have tweeted, texted and called me to say how upset you are about Trump’s statement tonight. You are very upset - but I’m actually not. So, let me try and explain why. Let me try and make you feel better.
I worked for @JoeBiden and @TheDemocrats for months. Long ago, we knew that Trump would claim the 2020 result was fraudulent if he was losing. He did the same thing in 2016 - because he (ironically) thought he’d lose that race, too.
Because of the pandemic, and because of Trump’s well-documented willingness to suppress our vote, we knew we needed to have a landslide - or, failing that, a massive early-vote effort.
So that’s what we did. I personally made hundreds of calls, almost always to help voters with absentee ballots, or early voting, or mail-in voting. And Americans embraced those options with a vengeance - 100 million of them!
Our early-vote effort was a massive success. It was the biggest such success in the history of electoral politics, I suspect. It was always predictable that Trump would attack that effort, when he figured out how it could destroy his candidacy.
What wasn’t predictable is how long it took him to figure it out. Me and other Dems thought he would try to delegitimize out early-vote campaign while it was still underway - not *after* voting day. By then, it would be too late.
Because it is. Trust me, friends: it’s too late. He’s done. He’s over. He’s politically dead and doesn’t even realize it. He waited too long to attack.
But he was *always* going to attack. It’s all that he knows. It’s his only talent. But he waited too long. Now it’s too late.
Can he whip up further division? Violence? Attacks? Murder? Perhaps. Maybe. But none of that is new, when you look back over the past four years.
To my many friends who are upset tonight: I know you are upset - that some of you feel physically ill. But tonight was always going to happen. He was always going to say the terrible things he did.
Why? Because it is who he is. Because he’s obviously mentally ill. Because he’s a hateful, pitiful little man. Because - most of all - he has lost. And he knows it.

And you know it, too.
