Good morning. Andrew Yang is a multi millionaire from New York, living in New York, which locates him on a coast and makes him extraordinarily elite. To use "coastal elite" is to regurgitate a GOP talking point that in face replicates bigotry. /1 https://twitter.com/ZachandMattShow/status/1324518032719433728
2) Coastal elite is a very flexible term that Republicans have been using recently to conjure scary images in the minds of their white voters that includes: Jews, Queer People, Intellectuals, and POC.
3) "Coastal elite" is a way of telling white rural people -- who indeed have lots of extra political power in our system due to both structure (electoral college/senate), history (making two Dakotas), and myriad forms of suppression -- that they are the real americans.
4) Notice the use of "Working class"in the quote. Again, it's creating a special status for white rural voters that ignores, in fact, the identities and lived conditions of workers (um ... a lotta working people live on the coasts and do not use "coastal elites" as a slur)
5) For decades, the GOP has propagated a narrative of coastal elites vs real americans, while in fact promulgating policies that also hurt white rural american lives, then has blamed "coastal elites" (Jews, queer people, intellectuals, POC).
6) We need to teach them to blame the GOP.
7) Yang is a mile wide. He's an inch thick. He hasn't done the reading.
