cultural appreciation can easily turn into cultural appropriation. instead of honoring another culture, appropriation demeans / dishonors it.
here are some examples. these are all from the past 5 years
to give you an idea on how much it HURTS, let me give you an example. when you grew up in middle school, you may have been teased for your culture, people may have mocked your name or your features or your traditional clothes. now, you see them all wear these designs while (1/2)
simultaneously degrading you. because of course, your traditional clothing and symbols only looks good on white bodies
"cultural appreciation is when you seek to learn about or explore a different culture. you strive to understand. you seek to honor its beliefs and traditions. not for your own personal gainโ€”money, fame, or the instagram photo. but to simply honor the culture and its people."
and don't get me started on how the hf industry called black clothing styles "trashy" and "cheap" but now steal from them on the runways. logomania? sneaker culture? tracksuits? all started from black people
