Just jumping in to say that we still use prisoners as slave labor here in Texas.
They work in fields, are not paid, and face punishment if they don't go to work.
This photo is from *earlier this year* and this man is not getting paid. https://twitter.com/Mike_Hixenbaugh/status/1325826586759802881

The top of this story - about racist prison names - has a little more detail: https://www.themarshallproject.org/2020/07/29/will-the-reckoning-over-racist-names-include-these-prisons
I will never forget when I started covering Texas prisons & discovered we use unpaid prison labor to harvest cotton. I was genuinely shocked and one prison official was like well what should we stop just bc it's bad optics? We save a lot of money by not buying cotton!
