We have seen our business go up and down by one hundred and thirty percentage points in 14 days. Peaks and valleys, a roller coaster of excellent beer and delicious food. A thread.
Small and local means we depend on other independent businesses and some larger operators. All of their businesses have also been on the same roller coaster. Too much or not enough. In the weeds or getting cut early. An unpredictable, chaotic operating environment.
Politicians dangle(d) financial relief and received a mixed reception. Seven months ago those same people were regurgitating two trillion dollars like a mother robin feeding its young after a rain storm. It is like two trillion dollars was not a big deal.
If you think your local place is doing ok, they could do better. If they looked busy once, it doesn’t mean jack. If they are responsible they are operating at reduced capacity so a twenty minute wait for a table don’t mean a thing.
Like us, 50% or more of their REVENUE is used to pay staff. Operating at reduced capacity means less revenue, if it looks busy.
The best thing you can do to help your favorite local spot is to be there when it isn’t busy. Go have pizza at 3pm and wave at the one other group seated at that time. Go grab a beer at 11:59am. Say hello. Cheer them on. Tell your friends to go, too. Order for a 4:30 pickup.
Pick ten local spots and scatter them on your calendar and commit to getting food and beverage from them on those days, with the pattern repeating, until you aren’t afraid to hug your elders again.
It doesn’t have to be us or anyone we sell beer to (though that would awesome so thank you) but pick ten. Cook less at home. Keep the schedule. Pull them through this. If you care about them, they are worth it.
Stay home for zero contact delivery if you are sick or exposed.
Ain’t no banker or politician riding a white horse, guns a blazing, to come save independent businesses before February. Be smart with your cash, and when you can order or go out instead of cook, please support local.
