LINT (short thread): People are asking — I guess on a scale of 1-10 — how worried we should be. Well, if I’m right (about this being a cover-up, not a “coup”) there’s good news and bad news https://twitter.com/asharangappa_/status/1326263560696029186
2. The good news: A cover-up implies impending discovery — which suggests a certain acceptance that at some point, they will no longer be in power (Biden will). So that’s, I guess, reassuring
3. Also, these people (the Nunes lackeys) are lawyers/policy staffers, being placed in legal/policy positions. Having studied Latin America for a while (though not an expert in coups), if you’re attempting military takeovers you usually work with generals, not nerdy policy wonks
4. The bad news is that cover-ups make it a lot harder to investigate and prosecute crimes. They also make those investigations very politicized. Might be good to review Iran-Contra, the Tower Commission, and the Independent Counsel/pardons that followed
5. I also don’t think this necessarily precludes an attempt to undermine/invalidate the election through the courts, though as my legal colleagues have noted, those are a super uphill battle and unlikely to succeed
6. But they contribute to casting doubt on the legitimacy of the new administration, which will further politicize future prosecutions, and also buy time for any current cover attempts to continue apace /END
