2001 | 2020. Bayern Munich; determination, desire, winners.

[THREAD]
The Stadio San Siro. A stadium to hold so many memories for Bayern fans. After 25 years in waiting, Bayern finally got their hands back on the European Cup. The 2001 final, for me, was the start of my real love affair with this great club.
It shares many similarities with the team of today, in how application and desire were the true winners.

What I love about this team, and this club, is how mentality strong we are.

Bayern had come off the back of one of the most crushing defeats ever, in 1999 to Man United
Players like Sammy Kuffour, physically drained and weakened, knew this could not happen again.

This final in 2001, was about redemption. German football was going through a low point, eliminated from Euro 2000, going out with less than a whimper. German football needed a boost.
It did not start well for Bayern, down 1-0 in 90seconds from a Mendieta penalty

A missed penalty from Mehmet Scholl for Bayern minutes later...this couldn’t happen again surely!? Was this finally going to be Valencia’s year, after countless failed attempts.
A third penalty in the 2nd half...Stefan Effenburg.....1-1!

Game on!

This was Valencia’s and Bayern’s second final within the last two years, someone had to gain redemption for recent heartache
Santiago Canizares

It seemed for so long that this man would have a say in how this game ended up. From the moment his thigh stopped Mehmet Scholl’s penalty, I found myself thinking, no, please no.

This was a goalkeeper that certainly wanted to be the centre of attention
Constant play acting, intimidation, gamesmanship, call it what you like, it was classic pantomime villain material. He made it a mission to crowd the penalty takers, trying to get in their heads. Effenburg was having none of this!
Bayern, like in 2020, had their fair share of young talent, mixed with experienced pros. Players like Kuffour, Effenburg and Jeremies, seasoned pros, knowing this was probably their last chance at gaining the Champions League
Owen Hargreaves was the discovery of Bayern’s Champions League run. A player born and raised in Calgary, Canada, to skinning Figo in the Semi final.

A story not too dissimilar to Alphonso Davies, tearing down the wings. Another Canuck, making the Champions League his playground
Otmar Hitzfeld was an inspired manager. He commanded huge respect from his players, they would run into battle for him, that attitude was what pushed Bayern over the edge.

When looking at the Bayern team from 2020, to the Bayern team of 2001, we see some similarities.
Youngsters like Salihamadzic, Sagnol and Hargreaves. Seasoned pros like Effenburg and Scholl. Tireless workers like Jens Jeremies and Lizarazu.

We see a mix of world class talent, but most importantly, a world class team spirit
When you think of Brazzo/Hargreaves/Lizarazu. You immediately think of true skill, but more importantly, you think of pure determination.

This is not dissimilar to the application of players like Goretzka/Kimmich and Davies.
19 years is an eternity in football, and with new tactics and such, players like Kimmich are likely to achieve greater notoriety than their 2001 counterparts.

The desire and willing to fight for the manager and what the club believes in however, is always there.
The Mia San Mia attitude flows through the team, it is routed in the DNA of the club.

You knew you would be getting ultimate performances from Lizarazu, Brazzo, Linke and Scholl alike. It is what makes this club the family it is. You fight together, win or lose.
It helps to have a world class keeper behind the defence. Oliver Kahn was that, and oh so much more.

I still will not know how he saved Carboni’s spot kick! 😯 This was a goalkeeper who embraced the nickname ‘Titan’ A true fighter, but a compassionate winner.
This Bayern win in 2001 felt like German redemption. German football was back on the map, and for that generation; it was much needed.

I wonder what we would be as a club, had we suffered a second loss in 2 years.

I remember the passion of this team, I was so proud of that.
This is why Bayern will always be successful, ahead of teams like Man City and PSG, who think throwing money can build a team.

A teams motto is there for a reason. It defines who they are, where they’ve been, and ultimately, where they will go.
I have been lucky to see the development of this great club over the past 20 years. I have seen true greats and club legends.

What I have seen even more so from start to finish. Is that, give this club a manager who the players believe in, and there’s nothing we can’t do!
This is a true footballing family. We win as a family and we lose as one. But we also know that winning also means someone has to lose, and we are gracious winners, never one to gloat at the oppositions expense.

19 years separated. A core value remains
