OBSERVATION OF THE DAY 20201111

The competitive arena of Energy Storage Batteries may be defined by something completely different from what most of us may be imagining

1. One can view this arena as being about the hardware, i.e. supplying big storage batteries and inverters
2. One can view this arena as being about the software, i.e. the protocols for simply managing the energy flows in and out of those storage batteries
But the actual reality of supplying AC electricity is much more complex than that, in part because of the extremely important need to maintain a constant frequency and its related issue of “inertia”
Solving this is increasingly becoming a vital role of storage battery systems, as we are beginning to see in Australia

We should expect this to become an additional advantage for Tesla and a significant barrier for casual entrants and wannabees
The market opportunity is not going to be fought over supplying the battery and inverter hardware

- being a cell producer is not enough
The market opportunity is not going to be fought over the software that runs the battery and inverter hardware

- treating the storage battery as a simple repository of energy will only recognize a small part of its potential value
The market opportunity is going to come from integrating the storage batteries into the total control of the grid and its obligation to maintain a stable AC frequency level
And the need to do that accelerates with every traditional physical rotating generator that gets taken out of service
Because those massive old heat cycle generators were the physical manifestation of “inertia” that maintained some degree of stability in the AC frequency of the grid

- simply from their speed of rotation
And let’s think more about it
