Hey nerds let's talk about werewolves. And let's talk about why I've always been drawn more to werewolves in gaming and fiction than to their (supposedly) sexier counterpart, the Vampires. And yes, this is completely me romanticizing my own Lupus as a ridiculous form of self-love
So some of you are like "sure, Lupus = wolf so I guess I get it". But Lupus was named as such because the lesions we develop on our face and arms and back reminded people of the scars you found on the victim of a wolf attack. And it can feel that way, when you're flared up.
We also get sick from sunlight and may prefer the night (I do). But unlike the average wolf attack victim (I assume), folks with Lupus don't die from it. We suffer, and then we continue on. Often in a duality. Lupus is very literally an inner conflict - the body fighting itself.
And what is every good werewolf story? A human, fighting as hard as they can against this destructive thing inside themselves. The problem however, is often not solved by suppressing the "wolf" in those stories, but by learning to accept it as part of you.
It's no different with Lupus. Lupus has no cure, and likely won't for the foreseeable future. So we learn to be with our wolf. At some point they tried to change our symbolic animal to the butterfly - but fuck that. Butterflies are fragile with short lives. Let me be a wolf.
SLE* roughly translated means "when the wolf turns red". Just like there is something inside me that wants to rage and wreak havoc, I have the capacity for rage, and passion, and chaos. If I learn to live in harmony with that, I can direct that. If I don't, it can overwhelm me.
Anyway, this was not as coherent as I wanted it to be, but hopefully it explains why I'm a fervent #AwooCrew and need more sexy Werewolves in media. Werewolves are sexy.
