I need a place to write this down. I've just been looking at Japanese destroyers through good ol' Wikipedia.
10 classes ranging between 4,000 and 10,500 tonnes displacement. The majority are under 7,000. With the Murasame class of 9 ships striking me as a Japanese Type 23.

So most would be considered European "frigates"?
However, these are mostly Aegis ships, many with at least 32-cell VLS and the "upper range" having around 90 cells. which is better than what we field

The cost is confusing me a little. According to Wikipedia, the Atago class cost ¥140 billion per unit (at least how I interpreted it) that's 1,004,604,790.00 Pound sterling today. These ships are roughly the same displacement and cost of a Type 45 and they only built 2 of those.
So the cost per unit is the same for a ship of roughly the same displacement with a 96-cell VLS system which can handle the SM-3 and anti-submarine missiles.
Sounds to me like we got ripped off a little?
