Hi, friendly neighborhood teacher here, again asking for your help while I post a thread about why Utah needs to shut down schools in order to take the virus seriously. Buckle up, because here we go....
It's very simple really. When schools are open the state indicates that children are not in danger. Because the state has deemed children not in danger, parents don't hesitate to let other children play with each other, go to grandma's, or visit cousins and aunts and uncles.
This is a problem - because OF COURSE children are susceptible to the virus, and OF COURSE children are capable of getting sick from the virus. But - and this is important - THEY ARE BRINGING THE VIRUS HOME WITH THEM.

And THEY ARE NOT GETTING TESTED.
How do I know this - you may ask? Because I see it in my classroom. A kid comes to school sick - takes out the three people sitting closest to them (as in they are now all sick) then BAM original kids parent tests positive for covid.

So kid A is quarantined - BUT NOT OTHERS.
WHY AREN'T OTHERS QUARANTINED? you may ask. That's a great question - because KID A NEVER TESTED POSITIVE.

Without a positive case we can't quarantine the other kids. Kid A is simply "presumptive positive" once the kid is quarantined.
Now, that's not to say that Kid B or Kid C won't go get tested. Sometimes they do - but often they don't. Why? Well, because it's THEIR PARENTS who get sick and get tested.

This is incredibly important. Parents are getting tested so they can take advantage of the 2 weeks pay.
Which, they absolutely should.

But kids can just disappear from school. They can be sick or not sick and come back sick, whatever.

Parents, on the other hand, need job protection. And once they are positive, the kids are presumptive positive.

But it started at school.
Ok, so whatever, the state has said that only 3% of spread is happening at schools.

And this is completely because children are not getting tested. As our President (who is just hiding now) once said "If you don't test, you don't have cases".

Literally this is happening.
But ok ok ok, let's pretend that this is true, that only 3% of the spread is coming from schools.

There have been over what, 3,000? Cases from schools?

If you just assume at least one other person in the family gets covid from that person - that's 6,000 cases.
Now, that's just what we KNOW about.

Because you know what? There's literally no contact tracing for lunches.

You heard me. why do you think it's spreading in Jr. and High schools? Because kids just take their masks off and chill.

MASKS OFF AND CHILL.
So now, Kid P could have caught covid from friend A that they hung out with at lunch, but don't sit by in any class - and there's no real contact tracing unless Kid P happens to think critically about the situation or the families are fairly close to each other.
Which leads me to my conclusion - when kids have normalcy - the state thinks it can have normalcy.

@GovHerbert has essentially said that hanging out with 150 other families in school is totally fine.

And people want to see THEIR family. So they think it's fine too.
I'm honestly not here to debate this.

If you shut down the schools @GovHerbert you'll see more compliance from the state in terms of distancing from families.

Of course it's spreading in schools. And that spread is extending to families.

Because of course it is.
So, we need to call on @GovHerbert @DrAngelaCDunn and the states to SHUT SCHOOLS DOWN.

I know it sucks. I get it. I do.

But we need to do this, because what's happening in our state is criminal.

We need to shut schools down for it to be taken seriously.
And, we need to do more than tweet. We need to write, email, and call @GovHerbert

His phone lines should be flooded. Physical letters should pour into his office. Here's his contact: https://governor.utah.gov/contact/
