The official insomniacs' thread of day-after Dolphins-Chargers thoughts:
This is is no order other than what pops into my brain. Antonio Callaway must have been a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency activation. He didn't play a single snap yesterday.
Jakeem Grant has caught a career-high 22 passes with seven games remaining. He's been targeted 12 times in Tua Tagovailoa's three starts -- the same number of targets he had in Ryan Fitzpatrick's six starts.
The Dolphins have some really upside down stats for a 6-3 team (particularly one that is +69). They've been outgained by 53.8 yards per game, are -23 in first downs, and -.2 in yards per play. But they're +4.6% on third downs and a whopping +33.8% on fourth downs.
More stats that make you shake your head: The Dolphins are last in yards per rush (3.6), 29th in offense (318.1), 28th in rushing (98.7), 28th in third downs (38.5%), 26th in passing (219.4) and yards/rush allowed (4.7) and 25th in first downs (20.6) and RZ defense (71.4%).
But what they do well, they do REALLY well. Top 10 in KO coverage (16.0), punt coverage (5.1), goal-to-go offense (90%), 3rd down defense (33.9%), 4th down defense (41.2%), punt returns (14.7), FGs made (95.2%), turnover margin (+5).
Xavien Howard's time atop the NFL in interceptions (5) lasted some three hours. JC Jackson is back ahead, picking off his sixth pass last night. Howard also ranks eighth in passes defensed (10).
Emmanuel Ogbah is tied for fourth in the NFL with eight sacks. He's making $7.5m APY. The three players ahead of him? Myles Garrett ($25m APY), Aaron Donald ($22.5m APY) and TJ Watt ($2.3M APY, but about to get PAID). Dolphins control Ogbah's rights through 2021 season.
After ranking 29th in sacks-per-pass attempt in 2019 (an atrocious 9.43%), the Dolphins' offensive line is much improved in 2020. They rank 12th in 2020 (5.11%).
Among non-quarterbacks, Salvon Ahmed has 17.1 percent of the Dolphins' rushing yards on 13.5 percent of their attempts.
There's still so much more room for growth in the Dolphins' offense. In the last four games, DeVante Parker has caught just 12 of his 24 targets, at a scant 5.5 yards per target.
Dolphins-Chiefs in Week 14 would be a prime game to be flexed to SNF if the existing matchup wasn’t already appealing to NBC: Steelers-Bills. So if the Dolphins are to break their SNF drought, it’ll almost certainly have to come down to a Week 17 AFC East title game.
Snap counts for Dolphins-Chargers
The Dolphins have 91 points on 161 offensive snaps the last three weeks. That's just silly.
Brandon Jones as the Dolphins' top snap-getter among rookie defensive backs is a prop bet I would have lost in August.
I had to triple-check this to make sure I had it correct: Melvin Ingram was on the field for 49 snaps Sunday and had zero statistics: No tackles, no sacks, no QB hits, no passes defensed. Nothing. Fantastic job by the Dolphins' OL and by Tua for getting the ball out fast.
The Dolphins have forced a turnover in 15 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL. The Ravens saw their league-leading 21-game streak snapped last night.
