What's interesting in VC funded entrants is the fact that discounting is the pivot & typically a race to the bottom. Careem came in guns blaring and I was a loyal customer for ages, first the discounting started then QoS started to take a hit.Loyal customers go first ask @Huk06
But seemingly VC money either doesn't learn or perhaps more resilient than angel investors. Recently DL the Airlift Exp app. Not two days in and boom discount msgs. You wonder that 24m$ would go farther than an MVP style app and discounts as the customer acquisition strategy?
Any one can sell anything at a discount especially in a price sensitive market like Pakistan. Maybe there is a larger strategy at play. But burning discounting $s & not having product is likely a far worse sin. Conversion funnel is push notification to OUTOFSTOCK in 3 clicks?
Before every one starts to remind me that VC money is good for the ecosystem & these guys are ahead of their time. No debating that. Net net even the folks getting discounts benefit. The real issue is smart money coming in ensuring long term success & enabling the ecosystem but..
Where is the unit economics in discounting alone when even the product sku & fulfillment radius is fairly sparse? If 10m$ rounds are all the rage, clearly better use of proceeds with what ever trajectory things are on right now. Especially if you can add OUTOFSTOCK items to cart.
