I am always curious how y’all frame student loan debt as a *mostly* middle class issue. The data doesn’t support that. Y’all don’t know just how many folks w/ student loans are working class & poor. How many were preyed upon by for profits and never graduated (see: “Lower Ed”).
Not only this, but a lot of the racial wealth gap is exacerbated by this debt!
Black folks are told to get these loans and work hard— Blah blah American dream and they’re intentionally funneled into low wage jobs/ blocked from career advancement because of racism.

If we are going w/ college as consumerism + continue to have loans, even if or after some forgiveness, they *must* be tied to career outcomes.
These schools owe it to the students they recruit to see to it that they are able to gain the tangible benefits capitalists tie to edu.

I don’t believe in education as the great equalizer nor poverty solution for the very reasons in the prior two tweets.
But selling a product that doesn’t equitably work poses a threat to those most vulnerable.
Alternatively, we can reimagine credentialism altogether.

To be fair, I don’t give a crap personally if my debt is ever forgiven.
My plan was to stay in education long enough for forgiveness anyway and reassess after.
But I also know I’m privileged. I came out and was able to ensure I can get PSLF without being misled.

The US Dept. of Ed and loan servicing agencies have perpetrated a fraud against the American people. How?
By saying do X for 10 years and we forgive you only to change the rules along the way. PSLF is a hot mess and so is TEPSLF.
This isn’t just about borrowers.

Borrowers can do everything right.
We have penalized folks for making extra payments. No PSLF. We penalized folks for paying on time because they’re mot in the “right” plan. No PSLF. This. Is. Fraud.
Moreover, the government + corporations should not be making money off loans.

We must get money hungry folks out of education for the sake of today’s generation but also those after them.
Why the hell is the average mortgage rate 2.5% but it’s 6-7 for student loans.
A 1.5% interest cap is enough to employ people to cover servicing.

But as long as the business of loans are tied to the private sector, people will direct their misplaced anger.
I want loans forgiven even if it doesn’t include me.
If hbcu grads have their loans forgiven and not me? Great. If K-12 teachers were prioritized, great.
I truly do not care if Im not included because I know these loans hurt MYE community. I’ll take an L for greater good.

I wish y’all would just say you want to see others suffer and go.
