I just scrolled through my account and a few months later I actually think I get this https://twitter.com/banditosleepers/status/1289820516690178050
I did NOT get “can you build my house with pieces” but they returned to that image in The Hype. the house was damaged when they “blew up” in the mainstream and became overexposed, and they had to retreat into it and create for themselves again. +
who is he asking to build his house? he’s using yellow tape, so he’s telling us, I’m arranging myself back together with the reminder of the people who really understand me. +
it makes sense that he would be talking to us here, since the lines before were addressing us directly, apologizing for disappearing and explaining that the past year has been difficult (and again, that he’s been too exposed). +
and this is another way to frame the idea of “another layer of protection,” of insulation through the help of other people, that we’ve seen many many times. even in the earlier line in The Hype, “it might take some friends or a warmer shirt.” +
as for "I'm just a chemical," that's more directly related to the theme in Chlorine of using music as catharsis. I think I phrased my thoughts pretty well here. he's been calling "this beat" a chemical + https://twitter.com/banditosleepers/status/1313257049522806784?s=20
and when he recontextualizes from [his relationship with songwriting] to [his relationship with us], he acknowledges that he takes on the role of the beat, the vibrations - it's his voice we hear. he is to us what the song is to him; we use music the same way. +
it’s a similar humility to asking someone to cover you, really. “admitting that you’re not enough.” he’s saying, “I can give you and give myself this music, but this is all I have and all I can be.”
