One reason we can't trust the institutions to perform as they're supposed to is because the Russians have a well documented history of carrying out political assassinations in other countries. Every official involved in the election process leading up to actually installing Biden in office faces real threats to their person, including the electors, state legislatures, etc. This is not spooky spy conspiracy time - this is real and has been well documented overseas.
This is in addition to Trump's ability to point a firehose of stochastic terrorism and death threats at any official he chooses to tweet at. People have breaking points. Not everyone is courageous or crazy enough to do their job as needed under duress.
If you remember, Judge Ellis who was presiding over the Paul Manafort case was so badly threatened he needed security, and by the time Manafort got sentenced Ellis was praising Manafort for turning over a new life and reforming his crooked ways (lol)
Let's not forget the attack on the family of Judge Esther Salas which was committed, for lack of a better way to put it, under suspicious circumstances by a suspicious character who never lived to tell the tale of what exactly was going on. That was only in July.
One reason I have always been skeptical of placing all of our faith in institutions is because institutions are just made up of people and people can be bribed, blackmailed, threatened, or worse. We are dealing with criminals, remember that, and they color outside the lines.
