I want to talk student loan forgiveness. I am for it, generally. Maybe pick some modest amount — $10k — for borrowers across the board, save additional relief for those who need more. And provide something to the non borrowers and those who paid off debt >>
But mostly I want to push back on attempts to cast everyone with debt as a helpless victim and people who push back against the idea of relief as evil or mean. >>>
Ok work with middle class people making college plans. Many work hard to avoid debt. They make college choices like community college or staying home or attending school part time to avoid debt. It impacted their college experience and financial prospects.
To change the rules now, so that others who didn’t seek to avoid debt get a pass give those others a distinct advantage that wouldn’t seem fair if you made choices to avoid debt. It also sends a not great message to those who couldn’t afford college.
All of these are issues of fairness and framing. There’s no way the possessive left should be out there trying to shame people raising concerns. That just makes this an issue that divides and sows bitterness.
