15 million babies are born each year before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

A better understanding about the impact of prematurity will help many. It’s important to create a dialogue about this so women, families, friends and strangers alike know.

The impact of prematurity is huge on a family and potentially on the baby, often throughout childhood and into adulthood too. A greater understanding improves outcomes for the baby and parents.

As any neonatal parent will know, the concept of self isolation, infection control and quarantine is nothing new for us. We were doing it long before Covid came along!

So in my eyes parents cannot be differentiated from hospital staff in this setting.
