As it turns out, the first B of BBD Bagh, Benoy Krishna Basu was a member of Netaji’s Bengal Volunteers, started in1928 and on display at Calcutta congress. He in fact, founded Dacca Volunteers. Died at the age of 22 due to injuries at corridor shooting.
His 90th death anniversary is coming up on 13th December. He dropped out of medical college (Mitford- Dacca) to become a revolutionary. In 1930 August, he shot dead Inspector General Lowman in the medical college hospital and casually walked away. Rupees 10k reward on his head
Escaped right through the dragnet laid by police who had picture from the college magazine by disguising himself as a laborer sitting in third class and then switching disguise to that of a zamindar to cross river Meghna along with an unnamed companion. next target was ambitious
Lt Colonel NJ Simpson the IG of prisons with an office in the Writers Building. Benoy, Badal and Dinesh dressed in European attire simply walked in and shot him dead. The 2nd floor veranda shoot out ensued down to last bullets, Badal Gupta took cynide while Dinesh and Benoy
shot themselves. Dinesh Gupta died immediately but Benoy was admitted to Calcutta medical college hospital where he is supposed to have fiddled around with his bullet wound to make it worse (ouch). I don’t know why I am learning this so late in life
So many precious young lives lost at the altar of freedom. Some guided, some misguided and some unguided. And some clowns who stayed out of all this want to teach us patriotism and nationalism.
