‘Twas the night before Tuesday
When all through the house,
A chirping smoke detector
Awoke me and my spouse
The detectors were hung
On the wall with care,
And each battery was brand new
When they were first placed there.

All snug and fast asleep,
Oblivious to the late night noise
That dared to go, “Cheep cheep!”
And hubby in his PJs,
And I without my glasses,
Had been deeply resting
While the late light passes.

When throughout our house
There arose an obnoxious clatter,
Hubby sprung from the bed
To see what was the matter.

Hubby flew with his flashlight
Tiptoeing around to
Find the noise past midnight.
The blinking on the floor
Indicating a battery low
Gave a luster of Halloween
On the area below.

When what to my wondering eyes
Did come at last
But my tired husband, who said,
“That battery’s a thing of the past.
“They put cheap batteries
In a cheap smoke detector;
They should last 10 years,
But this one lasted four.”

More rapid than eagles
He returned to the bed,
As he settled in the blanket,
He turned to me and said,
“I’ll fix the detector
When the morning is new.
These builders install junk -
That’s just what they do.”

He proceeded to gripe
About the things just not right,
I said to him, “Hon,
Why do these things break at night?”
He scratched his beard
Then impulsively said,
“Those things are stupid,”
And sunk into the bed.

Now 3am, now 4am,
Now 4:30 and 5,
On 6am, on 6:30,
And now it’s 8:45.
My eyes are bleeding
With sleeplessness mighty
Don’t cross my path,
I’m feeling kinda fighty.

I sprang to my coffee
As I worked my day anew
I checked my email -
I still have lots to do.
But I carry on with my day,
Hardly able to keep sight,
“Happy Tuesday to all,
Maybe I’ll get some sleep tonight.”
