With all the excitement about Moderna, I'd like to point out that their CSO is Melissa Moore PhD. Up until a few years ago Melissa was my colleague at UMass Med and an HHMI Investigator. When she moved to Moderna, I'm sure many people thought "Why'd she give all that up?" 1/
I last had lunch with her about a year ago when she visited campus for a meeting. She said she was doing the most exciting science of her career. I had no idea she'd go off and save the friggin' world, but if anyone would do it, it'd be Melissa. 2/
This story is to stress (especially to trainees) that you are never locked into one path; our paths are our own to decide. Not only that, remember that your science background allows you to make major impacts no matter which space you work in: academia, industry, govt etc. 3/
