So today AAMC said they are removing Flexner’s name from their “Award for Excellence in MedEd”

So I did some digging. Since 1958, there have been n=65 awards given.

58 white men (5 named Joseph)
5 white women
2 Black men

Since 1958, the women who have won the most distinguished AAMC MedEd award:

2012 - Dr. Ruth Fincher
2013 - Dr. Debbie Powell
2016 - Dr. Elizabeth Armstrong
2018 - Dr. Sylvia Cruess
2020 - Dr. Sondra Zabar

Yes, first woman was only SEVEN years ago!

There have only EVER been two POC to have won this award. Both of whom are Black men.

2004 - Dr. Haile Debas
2008 - Dr. Donald Wilson

So, 2 of n=65 awards have been Black men. Zero Black women. Zero WOC.
Five white men named Joseph.

I am grateful beyond words to have learned and been mentored by Dr. Debbie Powell, who is still teaching pathology at the U of Minnesota.

When we consider changing a name, let’s also remember to PROMOTE women - especially WOC. but more than that we need to SUPPORT them.

less than 15% of Medical School Deans are women and approximately 10% are Black or brown, the vast majority of which are men.

So, the @AAMCtoday better do a hell of a lot more than just remove Flexner’s name.

Thanks to @ZarinIRahman for crunching numbers w/ me.
