Frankly I think a lot of people are underestimating the clusterf*ck that Michigan could become. At the end of the day it is unlikely to matter because Biden will win NV, PA, WI, GA and AZ that will be enough to put him over the top. But here’s why MI is a big problem.
People saying “calm down” claim the Secretary of State can just certify instead of this panel—but that’s not true. In her statement tonight, she *asked* the State Canvass Board (which looks just like the Wayne County Board) to *ask* her to do the certification for them.
They can decline to ask her. There are two R’s and two D’s, just like this Wayne County panel. And one of them has said already that he would vote to deadlock if he felt there was evidence of fraud.
It would then go to courts. MI’s Supreme Court is majority Republican. Doesn’t mean they will agree to block results, but this kind of law in the hands of judges is not where you want to be. Furthermore, litigation delays could delay certification past Electoral College deadline.
In the end it likely won’t matter bc PA, WI, NV, AZ and GA don’t have this kind of approval system where partisan deadlocks block certification of votes for no legitimate reason.
But it’s still concerning for MI in the future, and should outrage anyone who cares for democracy.

So many articles have been written about how a more competent version of Trump would have destroyed our democracy, which is much more fragile than we think. Republicans are testing destruction mechanisms to their fullest extent. They are learning—and that’s why MI is a problem.
UPDATE: they have reversed the decision and certified the results.
