2 months ago I began teaching an elective course around providing pharmacy care for the LGBTQ community. I had no idea what to expect from this course as were in the heart of the Deep South. My goal was to simply expose students to concerns of the community
Week one we discussed ways that pharmacies and pharmacists can increase their accessibility with the LGBTQ community and build trust within the community. The class had a lot of excellent ideas including signage/literature to welcome discussion of LGBT health concerns.
2 weeks later I started class by asking if anyone had anything good to share from the last week. One of the students typed into the zoom chat “_____ talk about your buttons” and I had no idea where this was going to go.
That student then shared that she made some buttons for her and her classmates that they could wear to welcome LGBTQ patients and show they are able and willing to address their healthcare needs. #YCTTM. You Can Talk To Me.
After sharing this, about half of the class held up their pins in support. My heart broke and I had goosebumps. I had requested a pin to not only support patients but my students as well. Today I was in Auburn for OSCEs and that student gave me a bag of pins.
Nothing gives me more joy than seeing students channel their creativity and advocate for causes they are passionate about. I will stand by their side every single day.
That being said, if you would also like a #YCTTM pin please let me know, I would love to share these with all of #gaymedtwitter to spread the love further

And don’t forget, healthcare rights of trans youth are under attack in Alabama. Act now: https://twitter.com/kastle1/status/1328457245974269952
Several people have asked about “purchasing” buttons and they are free!If that doesn’t sit right with you please feel free to make a donation to @TrevorProject
