What are some things in grad school that are harder for diverse students than for majority students?
By diverse, I’m including: race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, background, and culture.

Finding a mentor. In addition to finding a topic you like in a well resourced lab, you need to establish that PI and other lab members are not biased against you. Or against your work, if related to your diversity.

If you’re first generation in this country or in research, there may be knowledge others take for granted that you don’t know and can’t evaluate.

Depending on background, written communication may be more challenging.
With an accent or speech impediment, giving presentations may be much harder.
In both cases, it’s important to have a supportive mentor with whom you can be open regarding your needs.

Depending on family/background/circumstances, money to support/enhance grad school can be a major difference. In addition to housing and loans, this can impact transportation, food, ability to be present when required.
