Rishi Sunak says “in the interests of fairness” that public sector pay needs to be frozen to pay for the impact of coronavirus, let’s break down why that isn’t particularly fair, trying to be as objective as possible:
1) public sector workers have been deemed as essential throughout the pandemic, and have been told to work in public whilst it’s been too dangerous for private sector workers. We clapped the NHS for nearly 3 months because of this. Seems that we’re no longer that grateful
2) public sector workers have had a decade of pay freezes since the private sector crashed the economy in 2008
3) there have been elements of our government’s spending in this pandemic that are questionable at best. The handing out of lucrative contracts, paying far more than the standard value for PPE is being labelled as corruption. These £billions could be used to reward public sector
4) Finally, in good financial years, where the private sector has been able to expand profits in the last 10 years, the interests of fairness were not applied then. Public sector workers were not given a pay rise in line with the private sector.
5) finally, sod objectivity here, this is a political decision made by the tories to protect their interests. The thin veil of support for the public sector has well and truly fallen off. They treat the average public with sheer contempt with their lies. Get them out.
