Today's news that 28% of girls & 20% of boys have self-harmed in the previous year shows a desperate situation for young people. Effective mental health support is urgently needed so that strong emotions can be managed in safe ways. [A thread]. https://twitter.com/SkyNews/status/1329631570278440960?s=20
Specialist support must be made available for those already struggling with self-harm, whilst preventative measures are needed to ensure young people are taught how to manage difficult emotions. No young person should feel they are managing these feelings alone.
Parents/carers & teachers also need support in managing and supporting a young person experiencing self-harm behaviours.
stem4's @calmharmapp allows young people to 'ride the wave' of the strong emotions they experience, helping them to manage the urge to self-harm in the moment. It is free to download & can be password protected.
Our Head Ed programme for secondary & college teachers has a KS4 module complete with videos and classroom tasks to help young people to learn about how to manage the strong emotions that may lead to self-harm behaviours. The programme is free: https://education.stem4.org.uk/head-ed/
