That WaPo COD piece (lol) made me feel crazy but I of course have seen a lot of replies akin to “why do we let people who aren’t games obsessives write about games?”
Which is frustrating because folks that aren’t consuming video games the same way big fans or members of the media are still have things to say about the medium.
I want more pieces from folks who don’t know everything about everything already!
BUT — and this is why that particular piece drove me nuts — your hook has to arguably be stronger than the average industry writer. Okay so you don’t play games. What about your perspective makes this interesting?
Otherwise you get what we got. A take that manages to be uninteresting and pretty bad! It’s a piece designed to make your mom call you to tell about the new “artistic game that just came out.”
I just don’t want the takeaway to be “folks who don’t know games inside and out don’t matter” because that’s how we get real stagnation.
Anyway fuck Ronald Reagan.
