Every year I usually tweet saying I’m #thankful for those working in hospitals, missing #holiday dinners with their families and loved ones, so those who are sick can get the care they need. The year that just doesn’t cut it for me. It shouldn’t for you either. So pls see 🧵
Normally working on holidays like #Thanksgiving in the hospital is not all bad- things are sometimes slow and you can always forage for treats in the break room. People do gather for a special dinner provided by the hospital.
This year holidays are different. Even if hospitals provide holiday dinner to staff as many do, staff are not able to gather otherwise they risk getting sick. healthcare workers are people too. They crave social interaction like anyone. they do have to eat but they will eat alone
Our US healthcare workforce has already been under immense pressure and strain prior to the pandemic. Healthcare workers already have watched covid patients die alone, worried about their own health and their families, and some have given their life..
Now the ones at work over the holidays can’t just see their families and loved ones...they actually can’t gather to share a meal with their coworkers either or risk getting sick. Think about that if you’re gathering with your family.
Not only that, this holiday season, everyone who works at a hospital watches the census of covid patients grow every day wondering where will the next patient go. Will we have the staff to keep the unit open? Will we even flatten the curve? When will this end? How many will die?
Many healthcare workers are giving up hope that they can do much to stop this. So this holiday season, instead of thanking any of us for being the frontline, recognize we are the end of your line and that line is running out. You are the frontline.
So don’t thank us or call us heroes. As YOU are someone on the frontline of a pandemic, ask yourself what can you do to stop this. How can you message to your families & communities. Be the infection control champion for your family and loved ones. We cannot. It’s your job now.
It’s not too late to take charge and ask yourself is this safe? Stop and reassess. #staysmart is a good place to begin h/t @DearPandemic @IMPACT4HC you may think its ok I’m masked. That’s a start but look at each item. Pay close attention to restrict your bubble, air, time too.
Limit your risk of exposure.
If you find yourself exposed either by choice or accident, quarantine so you don’t infect others. Be a role model. This is hard work and we need community champions to step up to win. You are the hero now.
Why is it important to help nursing homes, homeless shelters, and at risk groups right now? Because they are the frontline. An outbreak there WILL flood our ICUs. They don’t have the equipment they need. Even a small donation helps 🙏🏽 listening/sharing. #MedTwitter #NurseTwitter
