I keep reading tweet after tweet talking about the average age of those who died of covid-19 and that we should have no restrictions (basically implying it is ok if huge numbers of elderly people die so the rest of us can live a normal life)
Each death is a tragedy for the loved ones of those families and to minimise that truly sickens me.
It also overlooks the long term impact on those who have covid-19 and whose lives may never go back to they way they were before.

We all hear about long covid and the devastating impact on those suffering its effects.
The impact on patients who have been admitted to hospital or even intensive care is just a huge a problem with huge numbers of patients never going back to how their lives were before.

We have seen not just the horrific damage this virus does to people’s lungs but have seen the strokes, heart attacks, blood clots in lungs, kidney damage, the muscle loss, the widespread weakness and the incredible psychological effects on patients.
We have seen pregnant women who needed an emergency Caesarean section in order to be able to prone them. Mothers who have needed to be intubated and have had to be separated from their baby for weeks on end. I can’t even begin to imagine how they have felt.
We have heard the family members, read their letters, seen the photos they send in, listened to their anguish at what has happened, listened to their fears for their loved ones. We have seen their struggles.
To diminish the impact of this virus is to lose part of our humanity for others.
No one wants to be in lockdown and have our lives changed. No one really wants to wear a mask. We all want life to be normal.
But it simply can’t be right now.
