1. Schools and COVID: a personal account.
I'm a teacher in a secondary school. My husband is a supply teacher.
2. Ten days ago I came home from work with a headache, but no COVID specific symptoms. The headache intensified over the next few days, but I continued to go to work because I didn't have COVID symptoms. My husband hadn't been at work because of car problems.
3. One week ago I developed a fever and chest pains, so I booked a test, which returned negative. On the same day, my husband had a headache, which developed in intensity and 2 days later he had a fever and booked a test which returned positive.
4. Obviously, we've both been self-isolating since. His symptoms have continued to mirror mine, following by about 2 days. Thankfully, we both seem to be recovering, gradually.
5. COVID, or not, this is playing out in schools all across the country. I've continued to set work for my classes, as is normal when teachers are off sick, and in the last few days I've been teaching some of them live via Google Classroom.
6. I believe schools should close for the last 2 weeks of term and teach remotely to help stop infection. With vaccination due to start soon this seems a sensible measure to help keep students, staff and families safe.
