I’ll never cease to be amazed by what so many people on Twitter don’t understand. To wit: there is nothing complicated about why Republican officeholders have aided and abetted Trump for four years. It’s what their voters demand, and they’ll lose if they don’t. It’s simple.
This observation is not intended to excuse GOP officeholders for aiding and abetting Trump’s corruption. But all the ongoing blather about “he’s got something on them” is stupid. They’re doing it because most of them represent solid majority-Trump constituencies. This isn’t hard.
The only way people can fail to understand this phenomenon is if they fail to understand just how far gone the electorate is in more than 20 states. The majority of people in these states are beyond reason or persuasion. They’re gone. People need to understand this.
But a lot people don’t WANT to understand how far gone these people are because it would shatter their illusions and break their hearts, and they can’t handle that. They can’t accept that the majority of people in a state like Arkansas, to pick one example, are just gone.
The sad truth is that there are 20 states (at least) that are culturally and politically an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT NATION than the rest of the country. These 20 states are the ones that people from outside generally aren’t moving to—they’re largely stagnant and unchanging.
And these states are the heart of the angry, belligerent, hateful conservatism that led inevitably to the rise of Trump. They have drawn a line in the sand: no more change. That’s what Trump represents to them, and the PEOPLE of these states will not tolerate any dissension.
