not sure about "unhappy" but our brains aren't good re: comparing to peers
like social media, we see each of our peers' accomplishments as "look at all this stuff everyone is doing!" not how it is spread across many... https://twitter.com/AdamMGrant/status/1333422415947378689

I remember at one point during residency feeling inadequate because of the projects/accomplishments my classmates had (making up some #s):
I only had 2... then I realized they had 8 things spread over 5 (of 12) other people... so my 2 seemed inadequate vs the 8 when it wasn't...

...but my brain lumped all of the other 8 into "things everyone else did"
when it should be "things 12 people did"
compare social media: we see everyone's highlight reel, not all the people checking their phone watching netflix or the failed breads etc

it's also hard because most of the things my peers did were really interesting and seemed like things I could have done (which is not always true) but... I was busy doing my other things. and playing xbox. guess which my brain focused on.
also I have 2 main foci of my academic work: social media & health policy, and I often feel inadequate in both
and then sometimes I interact with social media people who are impressed with my HP work and HP people who are impressed with my SM work and it is very rejuvenating

also one of my favorite things in general is when I get to talk to really smart people about their work and they describe their big serious research the same way a 7th grader talks about their potato in a cup science project
also if it's not clear, my point isnt how accomplished I am and how great all my work is but rather
YOUR WORK IS GREAT WORK AND YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH
