For anyone who for whatever reason feels overlooked for not being included in top-30 under 30 lists, FWIW I only started making games when I was 28. I didn't really hit my stride until my late 30s, and even then. I was 37 when I started Hinterland. And the best is yet to come. ♥️
When you look at creators in other mediums and where their work really had impact, it tended to be later in their careers. I know that for myself, it's only when I hit my 40s that I started to feel more confident as a creator, and to more fully embrace my own voice and vision.
That's not to say that people in their 20s and 30s aren't doing great work. I just think there's a maturity that comes from broad life experience and I know for myself, a lot of things that have influenced my work most have happened as I've gotten older.
In my late 20s I became a father, and then again in my early 30s. I lost a parent in my 30s. My kids have progressed past childhood and are now starting to see the world as young adults. I've been married for over 20 yrs. These life experiences have greatly influenced my work.
They've also influenced who I am and how I think as a leader. Hinterland would have undoubtedly failed if I'd tried to start it 5-10 years earlier. Our society lionizes youth in favour of wisdom. We appreciate popularity more than experience. These are not wise choices.
I don't have all the answers, and I will never have all the answers. I do know that every year we have the opportunity to grow, become more resilient, and contribute more than the year before. Age doesn't have to be a limiter. It can be a force multiplier. Embrace it!
