As a reminder - the USWNT equal pay fight has everything to do with centuries of harmful stereotypes and ingrained socialization tactics emphasizing that women (and women athletes) are simply worth less than their men counterparts
in addition to the discriminatory depression of the market for women’s sport via minimal promotion, marketing efforts, and viewership opportunities. Preferences do not develop in isolation - the preference towards women athletes has been tactfully suppressed through these efforts
and result in the myth that people are naturally (even implicitly - so out the womb) “less interested in women’s sport and therefore they naturally generate less revenue” when instead this interest has never been cultivated in the same way it has for men athletes and teams
to put this myth into perspective, similar claims were posed that girls/women were less interested in sport and therefore less deserving of playing opportunities - then title IX passes and we have seen a 1000% increase in the participation of women and girls in sport ever since
the market for women athletes and teams exists, the market has been suppressed, preferences do not develop in isolation, people are not implicitly fans of men’s sports - they are groomed to be fans via decades of intense socialization, promotion, and access.
