I only covered John for his last 4 yrs in DC (& if you think about it 2 1/2) & found him to be one of the most real & authentic people you will find inside the superficial world known as an NBA locker room
Sometimes keeping it real went wrong but at least you knew where he stood

I found John to be a person who cared deeply. Even though you couldn’t see that on his exterior. The 2017 Christmas gift comes to mind. He gave all his teammates personalized Rolex watches & it’s not that he did so to flex on em. He honestly thought it was what a leader should do
My main memory of John: he always stopped to sign autographs for the fans hanging by the rails. Always
And he was a 5-time all-star who looked & acted comfortably around kids in SE DC where he did most of his charity. Don’t let the “Wall Star” persona fool you. John liked people

John Wall wasn’t perfect (none of us are). He made some questionable off-the-court decisions, remembered far too many perceived slights and ‘what if?’ will hang over the last 4 yrs
But he also lifted the franchise from a godforsaken era.
And the man loved being here.
