/6 A few folks have reached out to me, asking how to get started in a television writing career. Here’s a very short, general primer on things to think about & do. 1. Be a writer who writes. Consistently. You’d be surprised at the # of folks who want a tv career but don’t write.
/6 Generally speaking... try your best to snag a production assistant or writers pa position. Then graduate (if possible) to a writers assistant or Showrunners asst position. This can’t happen on every show. Your goal then is to survive and collect referrals by killing your gig.
/6 These jobs hire thru word of mouth/referrals. A disadvantage 4 many of us. But stay in touch w/ friends who are also building careers in show biz & television writing. Join a good writers group. be a good citizen. People hate assholes & remember names. And life’s too short.
/6 There’s cold emailing b4 productions start up & asking to send a resume. It’s HIGHLY UNLIKELY this will work as a primary method, but all it takes is one yes. And most of all, you should also be making time to write spec scripts/original pilots/screenplays and plays.
/6 And then you should use these scripts to enter highly regarded industry fellowships with track records of success in advancing careers and/or skills (not contests) — such as Disney/ABC, Warner Bros. Writers Workshop, CBS writers program, NBC Writers on the Verge, etc.
/6 buy @CaroleKirsch book #HollywoodGamePlan for straight talk on launching an arts & entertainment career in Los Angeles. And Finally, take care of yourself: mentally, spiritually, creatively. the unexpected will happen. The good/bad/ugly/ beautiful. And know you are not alone.
