I don't know who needs to hear this but the NHL and its teams absolutely can afford to have a season and pay players and employees, they just can't do it without taking a loss (which would marginally affect any billionaire, tbh) and they don't want to do that.
It's the same philosophy when people say conglomerates who own newspapers can't pay reporters. They can, but not if they want to reach their arbitrary profit projections, which drives these decisions more than how much actual money can physically spend.
Capitalism isn't about having enough money to pay people, it's about being able to make as much money as (usually billionaires) want to make with a free excuse to not pay people in order to reach that imaginary number.
When people try to act like the players or employees should budge for their "benefit" of watching games, that's some inner capitalistic brainwashing power from billionaires. A season that does not pay full salaries to players/employees makes billionaires richer. That's the point.
The pandemic has been used as an excuse to destroy thousands of jobs/careers/lives in the name of making a few people a little bit richer. They've been doing this already; look at newspapers. But public perception of the pandemic has literally made these people RICHER than before
This is what makes the college football thing deplorable. These are institutions getting richer from TV revenue through their unpaid, endangered labor, and they are cutting other sports/programs to subsidize the ability to do that, with a health crisis as their blanket excuse.
But these programs are *still making money* for a few rich people, or they simply would not happen.

That's all, just seeing a lot of people online saying things like "the NHL/NCAA can't afford to etc" and they can, but not to make their magic number.
Last thing for real:

Not enough attention is being given to how the NWHL is paying every player full salary regardless if they play or not, and as far as I know, they haven't let any employees go. If they can do it, the NHL absolutely can.
