reasons why I think this conversation needs more appreciation:
after the dance scene they ran away, they were scared because they felt something strong and unbreakable like THAT connection, they tried to ignore their feelings and they were confused at the same time, but here's a difference:
the night before this conversation, the porch scene happened. They talked, flirted and spent a good time together. They felt the tension and they even STARED at each other,they looked at their lips and they wanted to kiss.

but, the day after, when they saw the school in ashes,and after Anne went to Rachel's house to talk to her,we can see that Anne is telling Gilbert about what happened and she ended up telling him how proud she's of Rachel's change. They were talking and they were sitting together
just as close as they were on that porch.

but also we can see that their minds fit perfectly: Gilbert agrees about everything Anne is telling him and he even motivates her to keep doing it and fight for it. We can also see Anne smiling, because he's talking about his dream with so much passion and decision. don't
forget that she was the one who saw him hopeless and lost because he thought he couldn’t be a good doctor. Don't forget that Anne saw Gilbert affected and insecure because he thought he wasn’t enough for his dream

in the other hand, don’t forget that Anne never talked about her article's idea and she just did it, but here we can see how she's telling him what she's thinking and now she's paying

attention about what he's saying and wanting his opinion...also they are not arguing about anything. Gilbert is there, supporting her and her dreams.

and yes, they didn’t communicate a lot when they tried to confess their feelings, but here we can see how their relationship would be in s4: communication, support, respect and LOVE for each other
