From a scholarly perspective, I’m intrigued by how Biden might govern. He’s the incoming president with the most legislative experience since Ford at least and maybe LBJ, but he’ll be in a unique political context: much better than Ford’s, much worse than Johnson’s.
Many expect he will rely heavily on unilateral powers like executive orders, but at the same time, his experience in Congress and his desire for lasting policy accomplishments may incline him towards a more legislative approach.
And he’s presiding over a fractured coalition. That coalition could hang together when Trump was in office, but what about when they’re in power? Managing the coalition is one of a president’s most important unofficial responsibilities.
Trump isn’t just disappearing from the scene, though. He could well remain the de facto head of the GOP and a constant presence as a foil for Biden and the Democrats. I’m just really intrigued to see how it all plays out.
