they no longer take wanted criminals. they do interpol background checks for active warrants and dont take anyone with drug or murder convictions. theyll consider people with minor convictions on a case by case basis depending on how desperate they are for men at that time
they do give you a new name, but it isnt a legal name and is only meant to help immerse you in the French language and for those who come from countries that prohibit service in foreign armies. any legal or offical document will have your real name tho.
although its on the individual to maintain opsec about their actual name. if you let slip youre in the legion and your home country comes calling, the french army wont lie on your behalf
