Since #Biden’s victory, there has been quite a lot of controversy about #EU #strategicautonomy. In my newest @DelorsBerlin policy brief I argue that we have no time to waste on terminological debates – at least when it comes to #EUdefence: https://hertieschool-f4e6.kxcdn.com/fileadmin/2_Research/1_About_our_research/2_Research_centres/6_Jacques_Delors_Centre/Publications/20201203_defence_Koenig.pdf

Summary THREAD:
2/ The difference was apparent in with the recent op-ed debate between #Macron (broad meaning) and #AKK (narrow meaning). In the end, they agree that Europeans need to do more for their own security, not least to be taken seriously by a #Biden administration.
3/ As French & German foreign ministers said in their op-ed: “We Europeans are no longer only asking ourselves what America can do for us, but what we should do to defend our own security and build a more balanced transatlantic partnership. These are two sides of the same coin.”
4/ #Strategicautonomy has been an official aim in defence-related #EU documents (approved by unanimity) since 2013. So it’s time to go past terminology and move to implementation by 1) proposing a balanced transatlantic security agenda and 2) living up to their declared ambition!
5/ Many thanks to @NHelwig @elvirefabry @DelorsInstitute @ankatstahl @ted_knudsen for their excellent comments on the policy brief and good luck to the foreign ministers for the #FAC discussion on Monday ! https://data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/CM-4887-2020-INIT/en/pdf
