Recently, I was asked to give my opinion on how football gives teenagers a sense of belonging. My response is why I believe football is the greatest team sport played by humankind. If u disagree with me, then that means you're wrong. 😁 It's long for Twitter, but here goes . . .
My locker room is full of kids with a variety of interests, different socio-economic backgrounds and every race of man. I have players who struggle to make friends who are able to find a place to belong on our football team -- because those aren't the things that matter.
It's about paying a price to be there -- showing up for summer workouts, fighting through two-a-days, and enduring mat drills. In a world of convenience, it's a rarity that people are willing to make themselves uncomfortable and forgo their individual desires.
It's a fraternity born on sacrifice for the team -- a brotherhood of suffering where a group of totally different individuals earn each other's respect through the sheer achievement of enduring "the suck," and seek a moment of glory beneath the lights on a Friday night.
Everyone in the locker room has to pay the cover charge through untold hours of sweat and toil. If you can do it, then you belong.
Thanks for asking me my opinion, @studley_15. God bless the players who play and the men who coach them!
Let's play ball!
