Recently I was invited to speak to European Parliament (Belgium) at #FemicideRisingGlobally.

A wonderful experience hearing from those around globe.

We never had similar event in Canadian parliament so thought I would share some content of my talk in advance of Dec. 6.👇 1/10
Security of women is vital factor in overall security of our country, and world.

Our states, governments can play a key role in determining society’s ability or capacity to prevent #femicide & other forms of #MVAWG. 2/10

3 key roles/responsibilities..
How we respond to violence is product of culture & its values.

Those tasked w/ prioritizing/designing legislation/policy now recognizing severity of #MVAWG.

Due to tireless efforts of feminist, grassroots movements, advocates, activists...

...but not enough recognition. 3/10
Why have we not witnessed more progress given efforts, particularly in some world regions & for some groups of women and girls?

Our lack of progress is due to lack of accountability for #MVAWG – a lack of accountability of both individual perpetrators and states/gov'ts. 4/10
It is equally important states ensure accountability by making sure those tasked w/ applying laws/policies also recognize severity of violence…

…and help eradicate negative attitudes, beliefs, stereotypes that perpetuate and maintain #MVAWG held by professionals, public. 5/10
Otherwise, the most well-intentioned legislation, policy will remain just that…

…progress on paper, but not in reality…

…and most certainly not in the real lives of women and girls.

To do so, we need the state to prioritize education - their third role. 6/10
These are not blaming statements (below), but they are statements of our reality…

…a reality that can be changed w/ more emphasis on education. 7/10
Education at all levels of society, beginning with those who wish to lead who can set an example. 8/10
We need to recognize #MVAWG when it occurs.

We need to be accountable in efforts to address #MVAWG.

We need to educate leaders, professionals, our communities, & ourselves – because we all can learn more abt #MVAWG.

The security of our states, our future, depends on it. 9/10
At #CFOJA, we try to help governments with all 3 - recognition ( #CallItFemicide), accountability (particularly in courts, media) & education of wider public.

On Dec. 6, National Day of Remembrance & Action on #VAW, commit to helping in any small way to make a difference. 10/10
