I don’t agree with the BBC stating deaths are rising gradually.

3000+ deaths a week is not gradual, although it fits with their narrative.

But if we look more closely something interesting is starting to happen...

👆weekly deaths are 21% above 5-year av. but there are more deaths from COVID than just the excess deaths.

Red is leaking below the av. line.

It is normal for deaths to climb as high as 15k a week during the winter set against a little over 10k in mid-summer.

Winter deaths seem to spike because respiratory virus transmission increases indoors during cold weather.

The pattern of COVID deaths is consistent.

SARS-CoV-2 just has a much higher fatality rate than other common viruses.

But they still kill.

How numbers evolve to Feb will be very interesting.

Look at the grey area of the graph.

At the moment we are not quite seeing the normal climb in deaths - other respiratory viruses are being suppressed more effectively by COVID measures as have lower transmissibility.

You can envisage a scenario where winter deaths peak doesn’t happen & grey area remains low, tho COVID deaths keep numbers high.

Then excess deaths for Dec/Jan come in either in line with, or perhaps slightly lower than average…

Large red area, mainly below 5-year average

But if this scenario plays out we will have proved that large numbers of needless deaths happen each year.

Let that sink in.

We may have allowed several thousand needless winter deaths in the vulnerable each week over many years with the mantra:

It’s just the sniffles...

We must start ask ourselves is why it has been acceptable for so long to have avoidable deaths climb 30-40% in the winter.

If one good thing comes out of #COVID19, it might be that we try harder to reduce the spread of viruses in the winter months. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55061543

. @matthancock might not be an intellectual powerhouse, but even he gets it 👆

But with @Conservatives championing disciplinary action for sickness (see Bradford Factor), don’t trust them to act

In the meantime, we should do everything we can to reduce transmission of all respiratory viruses.

😷 still banned in schools despite children being the only group whose infection rate went up over #Lockdown2

Want more proof – look at infection rates dipping over Half Term

@GBPubConfed, @theflva, @theabtt should be furious that schools are banned from taking basic public health measures such as wearing masks on spurious grounds – where is the educational harm in S Korea, France? https://twitter.com/Bekyhal30350346/status/1334456326802579457

Going to finish with this:

It's a classic and @MattHancock should be made to watch the clip in the eventual public enquiry.
