Tip generously. Always. Every time. Service jobs suck, and people have bad days. If they do a great job, tip more than that. Offer kind comments. Leave great reviews. You will never have to speak to a manager in 99.9999% of cases; if you have to wonder, then don't ask. Be kind.
I don't know exactly what would constitute that .0001% of cases, but think of it this way: unless it's something that would get a civil rights lawyer involved, it's not worth it. Not really. It's honestly not.
By the way, this doesn't mean simply accept bad goods or services. You can fix a problem without asking to speak to a manager or get someone in trouble. Just be patient and explain what you're trying to get. This really ain't that hard.
