Yates Oil Field, Pecos Co TX
'The Big Rich' mentions Sid Bass and Richard Rainwater shareholding in Marathon, operator of Yates (prior to acquisition by US Steel). In the early 80s, hostile takeovers - exemplified by T. Boone Pickens in E&P - were in vogue.
Mid-Kansas Oil & Gas Company (now Marathon) discovered Yates in 1926. The field is extremely shallow, ~1250' below ground level. To date the field has produced 1.5+ Bbbl from the mid-Permian San Andres and Grayburg Formations; the current operator is Kinder Morgan CO2.
Yates Field is situated on SE edge of Central Basin Platform. Best reservoir is platform edge grainstone carbonate, perm enhanced by dissolution and dolomitization. Reservoir seal is a salt layer in the Seven Rivers Formation; typically fields this shallow leak to surface.
Structure is gentle anticline, with 450' oil column at crest. In-place volume is 3.5+ Bbbl. Currently developed by waterflood, CO2 injection and horizontal drilling. Isopach map of San Andres + Grayburg above OWC. Figures from Galloway (1983) Atlas of Major TX Oil Reservoirs.
