No one really noticed that London was full of statues of white racists or that the names of their streets dripped with colonial blood. The idea that the Mayor is setting up a kind of kangaroo court to judge history by today's standards means that little will be left intact.
It will usher in a kind of Cambodian 'Year Zero' where monuments are removed and replaced with 'worthier', more 'woke' figures. Any Londoner daring to refer to a renamed street by its old name will be condemned as colluding in racism.
I have no objection to new statues and monuments being erected to commemorate more recent figures. I don't really mind if new streets get a black British person's name. What I do mind is the eradication of our history, which, for good or bad, belongs to ALL of us.
I recently filled in an online 'survey' about the statues at Guy's and St Thomas' hospital. All the way through, I was accused of colluding with racism if I tried to support their retention. It was as though the survey itself had been written by BLM. So much for consultation!
It went something like this...
Should the statues be left standing? YES
If 'yes', are you aware that these statues may cause distress to some people?
At this point, 'yes' means you are callous and 'no' means you're stupid. It was like this all the way through.
