The Airpods Max seems to be using the same hardware and software architecture as the Airpods: there are actually two Bluetooth chipsets, one in each cup.
It means that the firmware platform is probably the same between the Airpods gen1, pro, and Max. Even though the form factor is different (True Wireless vs Headphones)
It's a great and long term product-driven choice. It will allow Apple's developers to have consistency across all their products... when they will ship a new feature for the Airpods, it will also work for the AirpodsMax.
When developers will use the Airpods Motion API, it will work consistently with the Airpods Pro and the Airpods Max.
