Sri Lankan/Eelam Tamil food: a thread
Idiyappam/string hoppers made with Varutha arisi maavu. Sambal made with coconut flower and sothi made with thengai paal.
Kothurotti made with Ghodamba mavu, egg and meat of choice/ similar to kothu parotta
Odiyal kool is a thick soup made with odiyal maavu and sea food. odiyal maavu is made from Palmyra plant (panm kizhangu).
Mutton rolls are eaten as starters. It is stuffed with Mutton and potato, spicy.
Panamgai paniyaaram is a tiny snack balls made with Palmyra fruit (panm pazham), sugar and maavu. Similar to inippu bonda.
Puttu is made with wheat flour or Arisi maavu/red rice flour. Usually eaten with banana &sugar or spicy curries.
Payitham paniyaram is a snack made with Payitham maavu( gram flour), jaggery and coconut flower.
Thothal is a sweet/dessert made from Jaggery, coconut milk and rice flour.
Seeni Ariyatharam is a festival snack made from raw rice, sugar and cardamom.
Sillu kali/Paal rotti is a sweet dessert made from Red rice flour, coconut milk, semiya and sugar.
Paal sothi is made from coconut milk and pepper & garlic. It’s usually eaten with Idiyappam and rice (along with vegetarian meal).
Meen sothi is made with fish and coconut milk. It’s a less spicy curry, eaten with Idiyappam and rice.

Rasavalli Kizhangu pudding made from purple yam ( this slaps different oh my god)
Ellu paa is a spiced sweet balls made from sesame seeds, sugar and balck gram flour.
Panai/Palmyra plants are widely famous in Sri Lanka, every part of the plant is used in some way. Panam kizhangu, panam pazham, odiyal, odiyal maa, Panam katti (pam sugar), karuppani, kallu, Nungu, panaattu and etc.
Paruthithurai vadai/ Thattai vadai is a spicy savory snack made from broken urad dhal and roasted rice flour.
Kozhi pukkai is like a pongal (soft rice) but chicken and rice/red raw rice (theetal pachai arisi) are cooked together with lots of small onions.
